Zachary had to admit to being anxious about going to the jail again in the morning. He kept remembering the rough CO, how he had shoved Luke around and threatened him. He had told Zachary not to come back again. What if he were on duty again? What if he were the one in charge of inmate visits and told Zachary that he was banned from the jail and wasnât allowed to talk to Luke anymore?
But there was no guarantee that the same staff would be on every day or even every weekday. They might take other shifts. They might be rotated regularly. It could be the woman CO who had helped him on Sunday or someone he hadnât met yet. And it wasnât like they had a wall of shame where they displayed the pictures of everyone who wasnât allowed to visit the jail. He doubted if they even had a list on the computer with the names of everyone they wanted banned from visiting.
Or maybe they did.
And if they did, had his name been added to the list? Or was it just an empty threat?
He eventually decided that the CO was probably just blowing hot air. He had a quick temper and a job that allowed him to push people around physically. He probably couldnât be bothered to deal with administrative lists. Chances were he had forgotten all about his sharp remark toward Zachary. Inmates got into arguments with visitors all the time. That was why they had COâs watching the visitor room in the first place and so many rules written on the wall. Lukeâs meltdown had been minor, probably forgotten by the CO as soon as Luke was back in his cell.
Zachary was getting used to the security check at the jail. Having to be wanded every time, and the CO performing the check asking him whether he had ever broken his arm. Try as he might, he couldnât remember how he had broken it or whether he had known that they had put screws in it. He only vaguely remembered how annoying the cast had been. But then, all casts were annoying, and heâd had enough of them to know that.
His heart fell when he saw that the same CO brought Luke to the visitor room as had brought him the previous day. He pushed Luke down hard into the seat, making him wince. âThereâd better be no more nonsense like yesterday,â he warned. âYou want to end the conversation; you just give a wave. Donât need to act like a spoiled two-year-old.â He looked at Zachary and favored him with a glare. âDidnât I tell you yesterday not to come back here?â
Zachary shrugged. âI donât know, did you? There was a lot of yelling going on. I might not have heard you.â
The CO gave a short bark of a laugh and, despite his objection, let Zachary stay there and stepped back out of the room after anchoring Luke to the table.
Luke was glassy-eyed. Tired?
